In Act 2, Gears Tactics loses its momentum in terms of story, as it pads things out with side missions, and even some of the main story missions lack cut-scenes to provide more context for the tasks at hand. Padding the campaign by forcing players to complete side missions causes some pacing issues with the story, and players may find themselves losing interest in the plot until things inevitably start ramping up again later

However, there is a bit of a setup to perform an execution. First, players will need to cripple enemies by dealing enough damage to an enemy unit that they fall to their knees, but not enough to kill them. Then, a player will have to move a unit to that downed enemy putting themselves in harm's way to perform an execution . Once looming over your enemy's body, switch to your pistol and execute the tar

While Tactics stays true to the lore and world-building of the original games, its gameplay can feel foreign to those who are new to turn-based tactical strategy Larian Studios Games. Each move needs to be made carefully to ensure that all units survive and that your team doesn't get overwhelmed by the large hordes of enemies. While players are encouraged not to die in the original Gears games, the consequences for dying in Tactics are a lot more severe as units that die do not come back. This makes knowing some battlefield basics key to succeeding in Gears Tacti

Gears’ strong history of delivering stellar presentations remains intact with Gears Tactics. Though the perspective is different and the action turn-based, Gears Tactics looks fantastic. Splash Damage has managed to provide a presentation that looks and sounds the way a Gears game should. Whether it’s the violent growls of the Locust, the sounds of a chainsaw revving or the brutal popping sound a head makes following a headshot, the presentation perfectly captures the essence of the franchise. Though it may not have the close-up shots of a shooter, Gears Tactics still features plenty of detailed textures and models for players to admire, particularly in the menus. A suite of features allows players to extensively customize the visual experience on PC. Meanwhile, plenty of accessibility options exist to ensure that whoever wants to enjoy Gears Tactics can. It’s another fantastic Gears game to look at and listen to.

Combat encounters in Gears Tactics start out simple enough, with players going head-to-head with standard Locust soldiers . However, they soon have to deal with Boomers, who are armed with deadly explosives that can wipe out an entire squad in one fell swoop, and Snipers that can pin soldiers in place. But regardless of if players are fighting Boomers or Wretches, every enemy in the game can be a headache if players don't approach each combat encounter with a plan in m

Naturally, the upcoming survival title Grounded was also shown off through a humorous new trailer which even had a surprising shout out to Cyberpunk 2077 . Players can shrink down and survive starting on July

When players start an XCOM game they only have a handful of fresh soldiers who feel unprepared for the mission ahead of them. As a player progresses through the game it seems like every advance in technology or newly available resource is countered by some new weapon in the alien’s arse

Other than a brief foray into the Pop! figure world, Gears of War has always been a third-person cover shooter. Across all six entries so far, players have come to expect Gears games to play a certain way. Slide into cover, pop up and blast the grubs. Despite this, Gears is a franchise with tons of potential in different genres, which is something Splash Damage hopes to take advantage of with Gears Tactics. Embracing the turned-based strategy genre, Splash Damage has created a new type of Gears game that aims to blend this genre with the franchise’s roots. Is Gear Tactics another excellent addition to the franchise or does it need more time at boot camp?

As players will quickly come to realize, taking cover is the most basic but most important part of Gears Tactics . Cover can keep the player safe from harm's way and can allow the player to hold a point push up on an enemy easier than being out in the o

Speaking of enemies, a highlight of the Gears Tactics experience is definitely its boss fights, which play out like sort of puzzles and feel a little different than the standard combat encounters. Some players may find initial boss fights in Gears Tactics frustrating, but there are often ways that players can make the battle much easier. It's just a matter of figuring out the appropriate squad composition and where they need to send the characters on the battlefi

class=Despite some stumbles, Splash Damage has successfully taken the essence of the Gears franchise and transferred it into a turn-based strategy game. Gears Tactics is a true Gears title with a campaign that builds and expands the franchise’s lore, all while introducing new characters and adding new wrinkles to old ones. The turn-based gameplay fits well within the universe, providing plenty of strategy both on and off the field. Combined with some genuinely excellent main missions, Gears Tactics comes together nicely. It does frequently stumble thanks to the repetitive and frequent side quests that vastly hurt the pacing, but remains a joy to play throughout its many hours. Gears Tactics is a solid turn-based game that’ll make Gears and tactics fans happy.
